The State of the Twenty-First Century Family
Many children and youth are succumbing to the pressures of growing up in a self-indulgent and chaotic culture. This presentation provides a pragmatic, in-depth, and painfully realistic look at the multiple societal forces bombarding today’s families. Participants are encouraged to consider the implications of these dynamics in the educational setting.
For Preschool Teachers
Entitlement & the 21st Century Child
Does it seem the distinction between needs and wants has gotten incredibly blurred in recent decades? Societal pressures as well as adult indulgence have led children to believe that the world owes them, simply because they exist. This session addresses (a) the factors that promote children’s egocentricity; (b) the potential negative impact on children; and, (c) principles and practices that counter children’s sense of entitlement and promote healthy development.
Early Childhood Experiences and Adolescent Choices: Making the Connection
Do personal and contextual factors during early childhood predispose children to poor choices as adolescents? How can early childhood educators identify risk factors and attempt to counter them with protective factors? This interactive session will attempt to inform, validate and equip early childhood educators in their critical roles in the lives of young children.
For Teachers of Grades K through Five
Discipline: Moving beyond the Brain Stem
Effective discipline helps children develop self-discipline as it guides them from passive and/or aggressive brain stem responses to internal structure that leads to appropriate behavior. This session presents principles of effective discipline followed by opportunity for participants to determine how these principles can be put into practice.
Can You Hear Me Now? Communicating with Children and Their Parents
Clear and open communication with children, as well as their parents, is integral to fostering healthy relationships and atmospheres conducive to learning. Understanding and practicing simple keys of communication can lead to positive student social, emotional, and academic outcomes.
For Teachers of Grades Six through Eight
Pre-Adolescence: What a Ride!
Pre-adolescents are characterized by uneven brain growth, dramatic physical changes, wildly fluctuating emotions, and rampant insecurities. How do all these confusing simultaneous changes impact students’ thoughts, behaviors, and academic success? This interactive session will facilitate understanding of this complex stage of development and include participant discussion of how to effectively teach middle school/junior high students, thereby improving academic achievement.

Facilitator fee is $250/session, plus lodging and travel from DeBary, FL (if applicable). All sessions can be tailored to meet the host organization’s needs. Speeches are 30-40 minutes in length and workshops are 75-90 minutes.
